i have downloaded and installed aol for my mac and although i have no problems with browsing or e-mail i have problems sending IM's. Whenver i click to send the send button turns blue, however it doesnt send the message and the window that allows me to type the message just stays in the middle of my screen. Is there any additional upgrades/software i need?

AOL??!?

Well, you can download AIM and use that instead of the one in AOL.

since i forgot what i did with ichat.. (it was something simple)

www.aim.com

download for Mac OS X

install.

drag app to dock.

open.

type in your screen name.

then your password.

click sign in.

open new IM window

type "sorry, AOL didn't work for me so I went on a forum and asked for help, but I'm back"

send to everyone on buddy list.

sign off.

go to bed.

repeat.

You can check your AOL mail with Apple's Mail.app.

make a new IMAP account. fill in all the stuff. For Incoming server use "imap.cs.com" and for outgoing server use smtp.aol.com, using port 587, and password authentication. Works pretty well, except for the ugly folders that show up.

Have you got the firewall turned on? Basically, you need to open a hole in the firewall for instant messaging. There's some port configurations already setup, for example ichat. That might be the same port that AIM uses, but since it's AOL there's no guarantee. Go to AOL's website, find out which port to open, then setup a new rule.

How about you just stop trying to send IMs from AOL. AOL is a crappy service anyway, I have no idea why anyone would ever pay money for it. I wouldn't take it even if they were paying me.

I guess if you insist on using AOL, then you have to accept that it will suck and constantly cause problems. If you get rid of it and stop paying them, you will be happier.

Here's a more complete explanation: First, find out if you have the firewall turned on. To do this, go to System Prefs, and open Sharing, then click on the firewall tab. Is your firewall on or off? If the firewall is OFF, then I can't imagine why you can't use AIM. You could try getting the latest version and reinstalling.

If the Firewall is on, then turn it off and see if AIM works. It should. If it does work, then you can either leave the firewall off (if you don't have any services enabled in the first tab, this should be fine.)

If AIM works with the firewall off, and doesn't work with the Firewall enabled, AND if you really want to keep the firewall enabled, then you need to open the appropriate ports in the firewall for AIM. Put a checkmark in the appropriate box for iChat and see if AIM works. It's possible that AIM uses additional ports, and you'll have to go to AOL tech support to find out what ports to open.

If opening the iChat ports in the firewall doesn't allow AIM to work, then just use iChat instead. It is supposed to work with AIM, all you do is setup your AIM identity within iChat. For help on how to do that, go to Apple's Support Knowledge base.

Yes. Well, probably. Worst case scenario is that you can't, and you have to register a new screen name. But that's easy.

The latest edition of AOL is: Version 10.3 (Revision 4136.208 (US)). It works best if you install the program onto the desktop and not in your applications folder, after you download it from AOL's website. There is a bug in the AOL web browser, but everything else will work, when you install AOL this way.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't AIM contacts stored on AIM's servers?

So when you enter your screen name in iChat, your buddy list shows up automagically?

No need to write anything down.

Juno is half the price of MSN and AOL. I've had it for over a year and no problems.

Try a different browser perhaps. Juno was initially for PC's so make sure you are downloading the Mac application.
