i am new here so i am sorry if this is in the wrong place.
it wont read data cds
there is no floppy drive so it wont read those.
i cant get it to network via ethernet cable to my win 98 mac
tech support are idiots, they are telling my to email my 10 gbs worth of files to myself or to buy a $49. program.
i am soo angry at myself for buying this thing at this point i feel like this is the stupidest thing i have ever done.
i have data cd's that i burned using nero burning rom,
some are all mp3s (from my CD's so i dont mind ripping them again i just dont want to have to)
some are all data (.doc, .pdf, ect)
others are all .jpegs
others are all .mov
and one or two is a mix.
all from about 5 different blank cd makers(memorex, hp, fuji and so on) and NOT one is being recongized by brand spanking new ibook, which i am ready to through out the window at this point i am so upset at how difficult this is.

not sure of all of it but...
moving to a new system requires a little patience, time.
perhaps:
try your cds on another mac; do they open? at least you'll know if the problem is specific to your ibook.
ask around (as you are in fact doing here); hopefully, someone will know more about this than i do, but...am pretty sure there is a simple way to network your pc & ibook.
you may need to burn your cds for mac AND pc...
good luck
(hope some useful answers show up here!)

Which version of Nero did you use? If it's an older one, perhaps that's why the discs didn't work?
When I moved my stuff over from my Windows-based machine to my iBook, I used version 5, and the discs I burned all worked flawlessly. Nero 6 is available now, and has a free demo available ( http://www.nero.com/us/nero6-ultraedition.php ), so maybe that's worth a try.
If that's not the issue, though, then I'm afraid I don't know what it could be... :/
Good luck on getting it sorted out, though.

i am using nero version: 5.5.10.54 bundled with my external cd burner.
i dont know why its not working, everything i read says it should, i emialed nero and they said it should. i have NOT had a chance to test it on other macs to see if its just mine. but i will i guess in the next few days.
thank you guys so much for your help. i have never had to deal with this in the past. usually if nothing else works data cds do. so its shocking to me when they havent worked at all and tech support is no help.
apple website says to use roxio. i dont think its as good a program but i am willing to try, does anyone know where i could get a demo version taht lets you burn data discs?

Gah, damn... Well, if it's any help, I tended to use the Wizard to quickly throw together my discs, though I guess there's no reason that should work above anything else...

I hate to be the harbinger of bad news in this instance, but I just went on over to Roxio's site ( http://www.roxio.com ) to check for demo's of their CD burning products, but there literally don't seem to be any. X_X;;;
If you don't mind me asking, though, what happens when you pop a disc in? Does the icon for the disc drive not show up at all? Or do the contents not appear in the Finder?

Hi, maybe something is wrong with your iBook CD drive. when you insert a CD (even if it's been formatted in Windows) the CD icon should appear on the desktop. at the very least, if there is a problem, a window should pop up telling you that it can't read the disk.
can you read the CD's that came with your brand new IBook at least? do they appear on the desktop?

thank you again. it sucks that there is no roxio demo.
ok here is what happens when a cd is inserted:
cds bundled with the ibook, work just fine. shows up on desktop and finder
store bought audio cd's launch itunes and show tracks, play as normal. shows up on desktop and finder
data discs with ALL mp3 files, launch itunes but then a pop up window says that the disc is black and what i should name it. the disk does not show up on the desktop or finder.
data dis with NO mp3 files or mostly non mp3 files. nothing happens at all. it just spins and spins and spins. but nothing happens.
did i get a lemon or are all ibooks this way?

Hmn, that is kind of odd - I've never seen that behaviour with iTunes when inserting a data disc that only contains MP3s, or any of the rest of it...
I'm afraid I'm stumped, now. :/ Wish I could help more. Good luck with this - I hope someone's able to help you get it fixed up soon.

My first iBook that I got back in 2001 had a flakey DVD drive; it would read some CDs but not others. The one it was replaced with, and all the Macs I've used since have not had this problem, reading any optical disc I put in them. So, it might be that you got a lemon. When did you buy it? Was it first or second hand? If it's less than a year old you can get Apple to fix it under warranty.
That's if the optical drive is flakey. However, before you assume that, try the problem CDs in some other Macs. Also, your external CD burner; it is USB? FireWire? Try hooking it up to your iBook and seeing if you can read the CDs that way. If you can, then call Apple about getting your iBook fixed. If you can't, it seems likely that those are some dodgy CDs.

I had a problem with an Iomega ext. USB burner. My iBook and iMac both had problems reading disks that where made with the burner. The burner would read the disks but that is about it.
As far as the networking part. What are you attempting to do or what kind of errors are you having? I can tell you that even networking a Mac with an XP machine can by a chore.
