My 12-in (Rev A, if that makes a difference) PB has, in the past month, developed severe latch problems. SOme of the time, it simply won't close at all. It's very sporadic, but seems to be getting worse.
Anyone else with a PB that has served them well for a long time (mine is 19 months old) that's suddenly gone quirky?
I know I'm going to need to take it in, but the nearest Apple store is at least 25 miles away and it's just not going to happen this week. What a pain.

i got a very very used 12 from a coworker and it closes fine, but sometime you have to hold in the button and pull up on the lid to get it open,

I got a 5 month old 12" PB Rev. C, and the latch is really annoying me lately. I can't seem to get it closed without being busy with it for 5 minutes. I really don't want send it in, as I need the PB, but if this continues, I'll have no choice.

I have a similar problem: my PowerBook 12" closes, but it does not stay in standby mode. Instead drains the battery while being carried around. A firm squeeze shuts it off, but just temporarily.
I have considered installing a patch that disables the on/off operating by opening/closing the lid, but would prefer not to do so.
Any thoughts?

You don't need a patch.
Just type in the terminal
sudo pmset lidwake 0
and your powerbook will not wake up when the lid jitters.
Reset with
sudo pmset lidwake 1
Thats it.

Thank you Dr. Michael. However, for some reason, the argument 'lidwake' does not exist for the pmset command on my OS X (10.2.8).

Usage: pmset [-b | -c | -a] <action> <minutes> [[<opts>] <action> <minutes>...]
pmset -g [disk | cap | live]
-c adjust settings used while connected to a charger
-b adjust settings used when running off a battery
-a (default) adjust settings for both
<action> is one of: dim, sleep, spindown (with an argument of minutes)
or: reduce, dps, womp, ring, autorestart (with a 1 or 0 argument)
eg. pmset -c dim 5 sleep 15 spindown 10 autorestart 1 womp 1

Dr. Michael ... thanks a bunch .. I read that from you months ago, and I havent had aproblem since, and my friend did the same with his powerbook.
That being said... My powerbook hinge (rev c) is a little sticky on the right side. You can see a slightly wider gap on the left side of the hinge, and almost no gap on the right. sometimes it swings smoothly, sometimes it squeaks before it moves (and it a little sticky when it squeaks) .. i dont want to send it in either .. but i'm sure i'm going to buy that applecare just in case. i baby my laptop so i dunno if it's the heat that's making it stick (expanding metal causing it to move). anyways ... i love my powerbook and wouldnt want to send it in for however long. also, i'd worry about themm scratching my powerbook while they take it apart and move the placement of the hinge. oh well ...

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

yes, you have to repeat many things here frequently :o). Everything simply disappears in the depth of the database.
Anyway, good to read that some postings are useful for you.

Then it is highest time to apply some drops of oil. This was essential with the TiBooks to avoid damage like breaking of the hinges or case cracks. Olive oil from the kitchen will do a good job here.
Hinges are moving parts. Oil is always a good idea from time to time.
jesperlarsson,
I don't remember if this worked with Jaguar. I think it did. You get the complete info with "man pmset".
