first posted in mac mod but no one decided to help i hope the folks over here are more responsive

hey for the past few years i have wanted one of the colour iBooks but im not sure whether to get one now as it would be really slow compared to my iBook 800. so i was wondering how fast it is possible to get them either by overcloacking or an upgrade.
thanks for any help

i have also read around here that they are limited to 800x600 res is there any way to over come this as the 12" screen should be capable of holding more than that

I'm unaware of any way to overclock the ole clamshell iBooks. The fastest processor available was 466MHz. The only way to make them faster would be to max out the ram at 576MB (except on the first iBooks released which can only go up to 544MB because of the 32MB on board). Slap a faster HD in but that is about it.

You would probably be better off gettting something new unless you can find a real good deal. The 466MHz models are still going for $500-$700 and sometimes more.

Check this one out that:

The screen will never be upgradable, so learn to live with a cramped space. The pixels are fixed. LCD's can not go higher than their native resolution. The Clamshells native was 800. The newer ones are 1024. But don't bother as the screens are completely incompatible.

Personally, I'd get an older G3 iceBook and paint it if you want color. They're far more worth it and supported better. If you just want the cool case design, then by all means, but color can be had with a torq screw and some work..

I've heard of some sort of overclock. its hardware though so it won't be easy but on a machine like that a hard drive/ram upgrade will be more benificial. or at least as far as noticable improvements go heck you could even run osx on it run slow though though not too bad if you max ram and improve hd speed no quartz extreme though. it would be a nice machine.

I had a Blueberry iBook with a 30GB 5400rpm HD and 320MB RAM. It did very well with Jaguar. I wouldn't have tried to do anything more than surf the web, type papers, and a little iTunes. If you just need a laptop and don't plan on using it as a primary machine you should be ok.

I concur. I have a 600MHz G3 iBook and it performs fine enough for what I use it for. My primary computer is a G4 700 iMac. THAT is the one I do all the stuff on. But I use the iBook for browsing. And it performs like a champ.. sometimes it seems faster than my iMac..

Though, I don't think I could EVER get along with an 800x600 screen. No way. I must have 1024x768 at least. Anything smaller is too cramped in OS X.

Believe me. The res is the only reason I didn't run right out to eBay and buy the first really cheap Clamshell I saw. I would have HATED the resolution. Glad I waited it out. I wouldn't have my superb iceBook if I had been fast on the draw.

Look around a little first. You'll be glad you did.

I'm just wondering, if you own an iBook 800, why would you want to downgrade to a clamshell? Don't misunderstand me, I love clamshells. I firmly believe my iBook 466 is the best iBook ever produced. And I don't mind the low resolution display, either. Is your iBook 800 working properly?
