Lacie Triple Interface:

200GB - $238

250GB - $265

are any of these a good price? these prices are after tax and shipping. basically, the final cost.

thanks.

My LaCie 400 GB "Big Disk" crashed at 53 weeks of age. "Too bad" was LaCie's response, told me to buy another one at full price.

I bought a 250GB FW800/400 USB2 OWC Mercury Elite for US$298 and so far it is great. <http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Pa...amp;Template=1>

I plugged the Mercury in and it worked, no problems. My recall was that the LaCie took some effort to get it right, even before it died so soon.

I have dealt with OWC with other products, including returning third party RAM for a PB17 that I returned to Apple, and they have been first rate. Their prices are very competitive but I would buy there even if they were not because - unlike LaCie - they have done right by me even when they did not have to.

ok i think im going to do what ive heard the most: buy a seperate enclosure and hd. i'm looking at seagate already for the 5 year warranty.

as for the enclosure, factors like power, chipset and size issues are confusing. is there a compatability factor for the case and the hd? do i need to buy a specific power case?

and can anyone say if this case is good:

thanks all!

reemas. that case should work fine, its nice looking too. it is a bit pricey but it is aluminum and it does have firewire and usb 2. If you are looking for a cheaper option search for the coolmax firewire/usb2 case. its also aluminum, kind of long, no firewire 800, but I have one and I like it a lot. I also have a much cheaper plastic case (fw/usb2) that also has given me no issues, heat or otherwise.

Reemas: what laptop do you have? For example, if you've got the 12" then you don't need firewire 800, and the 12" doesn't have gigabit ethernet. If you've got a 15", then you'd be shopping for enclosures with fw-800 and you'd have gigabit ethernet.

I assembled a fw-400 HD for a 12" using this enclosure from newegg.com. Macally cases are rugged and the aluminum dissipates heat. If you want lightweight portability, you'd get a plastic enclosure...

If you don't need USB 2.0 (the only reason you'd need it is if you're planning on connecting to a PC) here's an enclosure with just fw-400 for about half the price:

Macally also has cases with fw-800, which cost more (do a search on newegg.com)

Nearest I can tell is that this enclosure is for 2.5" laptop drives? If you want a 3.5" large capacity HD, this won't work.

thanks. i have 15" 1.5ghz powerbook.

i finally decided, and went with a w.d. hard drive. 7200 rpm, 8mb buffer, 8.9 ms seek, 250GB for 150-50 = 100 bucks at outpost.com

and as for the case i went with this one:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...351&depa=0

its a fire wire 800 case. i want to use this HD as a scratch disk, but don't think the 800 was necessary, at least according to some of the posts.

Total setup after shipping and tax cost me $230 for fw800 250GB setup.

not great, but not bad i think.

damn uncle sam!!
