I started up my PowerBook today and the screen was extremely dark, as if the brightness was turned as low as possible.
"Funny", I thought, "I don't remember touching the brightness." Turns out that I did not as my brightness was cranked up high but the screen was still dark. I immediately rebooted with hopes the machine would "fix itself" and it did but then went dark when I moved the screen back. I noticed that minor adjustments in the screen were causing it to go dark and normal pretty consistently (thought its running now without a problem).
It leaves me with a couple of questions:
1. Is this an issue that people have seen before and if so what are your suggestions?
2. Should I be proactive and try to get this fixed right away or reactive and wait for it to break?
Any other suggestions would be great.
Thanks in advance.

i have the some model and it's funny because just this week it seems like i've lost about 1/3 to 1/2 of my screen's brightness. it used to be so bright i had to keep it turned down pretty low to be comfortable...now i'm almost at full blast. i tried resetting my pram, and it did seem to help a little, but am hoping there's something else i can try.

It'll be a problem with the cable that runs from the logic board to the screen. I had a similar problem with my iBook, and basically the hinge can rub against the cable eventually breaking it. In my case the cable wore through and so everytime I powered up I would have no backlight, but could just about see some stuff on the screen.
"Tweeking" the screen by moving it slightly would some times bring it back to light.
I had it repaired under warranty. Hope this helps.

Sounds like it could be either a cable or the inverter (which powers the backlights.) The specific angle to get it to fail would imply a cable, but I've seen inverters be picky about such things, too.
Time to have someone crack it open. If it ends up being an inverter, it is a relatively cheap part to replace. The labor for it just isn't that fun. Find a place that's certified to do the work, and you'll probably save some cash over mailing it in to Apple.

I've got the same problem with my FW clamshell iBook, apart from it's the opposite way round. The backlight is always on, but sometimes the picture goes. All it takes to bring it back is adjusting the tilt of the screen, or pressing on the plastic above the keyboard by the hinge. I wouldn't recommend doing this last thing on a metal PB though...
Anyhow, it hasn't stopped the iBook from doing sterling service - 4 years and counting, which is more than can be said for my 12" PB, but I cant be bothered to tell you about all 46 case notes...
David.
