I've decided to downgrade from my 1st generation 17" to a 15" PB, because I'm tired of lugging the huge thing around everywhere. I travel with it a lot, and the size and weight have become too annoying. I decided to get a 15" and a 20" Cinema screen for home use. So, I was just wondering, are there any quality issues in the 15" that I should know about? I heard something about white spots, display problems, etc.
One thing I know I won't miss is the revving/whirring fan in my 17"—I hope the 15" doesn't do this too.
Oh, and is it possible to run the PB with the lid closed when plugged into an external monitor? Is this practical?
Thanks!

-White spots were primarly with the Rev. As. I haven't heard of a Rev. B with the same problem. Quality wise, I don't think you will have a problem. 20 inch cinema, lucky. I would die for one of those

-Mine has a small whirring fan on all the time. It rarely gets any louder though and it's much quieter than my jet propelled Dell in the other room but yeah, my sister's iBook's fan never came on and was dead silent, you couldn't tell if it was on or not.
Oh, and is it possible to run the PB with the lid closed when plugged into an external monitor? Is this practical?
-Yep, all you need to do is plug in a external mouse and a keyboard, close the lid, and press a key or click the mouse and it'll wake itself.

I've had my 15" 1.25GHz aluminum for 1 year and 15 days. The LCD backlight went out this morning and I cannot see the screen without shining a flashlight on it.
1 year, 15 days, no Apple Care ='(
~$400 and a ton of frustration talking to Apple Support/Customer Care. And if you're saying should've bought apple care -- I say to you, a machine with no physical damage should last far longer than a year.
Sure is making me lean on a 'throw-away' machine as my next laptop. I would stick with the 17" which you have.

I think that you will be very happy with one of the current 15"-PBs. You will get a machine that is a little bit smaller and carries way more power in it compared to your 17"-dinosaur. Go and get it!
