I'm very close to buying a Titanium powerbook (to run my beloved OS9)

the current runners are a

refurb
15" Ti PowerBook 800mhz G4, 40gHD, (DVI), Combo Drive

and a new
15" Ti Powerbook 1ghz G4, 512mb, 60gHD, Superdrive x 1 speed

any thoughts on either of these two models anyone? Obviously the 1ghz was a revamp and speed bump on the DVi - has anyone used these two models? Is the difference signifigant?

The price difference is enough to buy me a 19/20" CRT monitor and at a squeeze a newer ipod than my first gen 5gb model

thanks for your thoughts and help

How did you find a new 1 Gig TiBook? They're almost two years old.

i've got a ti g4-800 right now and am considering upgrading from it. i haven't used a 1ghz titanium but i have used a 1ghz aluminum. to tell you the truth i didn't see much difference at all. sure it was a little quicker, but not enough to justify upgrading at the time. and the 15" ti 1ghz has a radeon 9000 which isn't supported by core image (coming in os x tiger) so imho it's not worth the extra cost, especially if you can get all that extra stuff to go along with the 800mhz model.

plus i like the titanium enclosure so much more than the aluminum which is why i'm hesitant about upgrading.

My question is...with OS X so far along (and is arguably the best OS you can buy), why do you want to run OS 9?

Honestly, I'm not being sarcastic, I really want to know what you like so much about it (since I never got the chance to use it for more than a few fleeting moments).

I had a Ti667 DVI and traded up to a 1.25GHz Aluminum, and I too preferred the Titanium's casing, problematic as it was....

I recommend going for the 1GHz. It's one generation newer, and everything is a bit bigger or faster, including twice the VRAM (64MB vs. 32). Also, my TiBook, and others from the 667/800 series, still had the issue of paint flaking (mine was repaired under AppleCare). That should not be an issue on the 1GHz. Unless you know for a fact that the 800 is in the clear on this point, I'd go with the 1GHz.

Two schools of thought on this one. I assume that both of them are under some sort of warranty and that you don't need a superdrive.

I would go for the 800 and buy yourself some nifty accessories with the difference. Both machines will handle all of your OS9 needs. I am not sure that you will see a huge difference in performance.

An 800 Mhz machine, with possibly a larger hard drive a gig of ram is a wonderful machine.

I think you will have less fan running on the 800 as well (others can confirm that or not).

ether way you will be happy.....but try OSX.

my only thoughts are that love can be so hard to explain sometimes.

i can imagine needing os9 or being trapped by os9.. maybe having knocked-up OS9 and now being stuck at a shotgun wedding.

but seriously man, os9 is such a pos compared to OSx.. just let it go.

its fading into the daylight like the morning star at sunrise...

Some people fear change, some like running old software whatever the cause they should use OS X and classic regardless.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

Thanks for the feedback. I have used OSX and despise the window/grid/frame and unless you have buckets of ram is like being back in 1994.

The only thing i admire about it so far is its stability, it doesn't crash - but apps do so...

I want OS9 as I've lots of legacy apps bought and paid for that do the job well and I"m not inclined to rush out and buy new versions

I haven't had a laptop before and a Ti-book would cover a few bases - keep my familiar OS9 apps, give me the freedom of a laptop, and give me a chance to start using OSX...

I can see the wisdom in both machines - no matter how well spec'ed in 2/3 years i'll be getting another... there is no long-lasting future proofing with computers - things are changing so fast that sooner or later they're gonna get you ;-)

still mulling it over... will let you know how i get on

thanks again for your thoughts

What apps are you using that don't run well on Classic? And how can you get a "new" TiBook that's about 2 years old? I can understand how a Ti can still be attractive, but it is a little funny hearing talk of the performances when even the iBooks have better performance.
What prices are you talking about for the contenders?

i wonder when you last used osx..

i think it was 10.3 which literally convinced my dad not to buy a g5 because it made his g4 533 DA machine so much faster.

I've had the same experience. if you have a video card that's gf3 or faster, the UI boots along now.

If you get a 2 year old tibook, you'll still think it's slow.

anyway, as someone said u can still run os9 apps in classic or many of them. osx is the future .. i can see waiting a while to make the jump, but in terms of stability of the os and the apps that run on it, it's laughable to compare it to os9.

i don't think any apps except IE have crashed on my cube for about year. The machine itself only gets rebooted for updates. Otherwise, it's on 24/7 and its solid.

i got a powerbook 1.33 recently, and i haven't turned it off yet. and not a single app has crashed so far.

well if he's running os9 on a ti800, it'll feel much faster than even a new 1.33ghz albook. and do the new powerbooks even boot os9 anymore?

to each his own i guess. os x has been a godsend for me. after about 2 months of apprehension about making the switch (about 3 years ago anyway) i made the jump and erased all of my os9 apps and system folders. os x is just filled with yummy goodness, i really enjoy my macs nowadays.

back to powerbooks, my ti800 has served me well but after i got my g5 2x2, it's started to feel more and more sluggish. it'd probably be just fine if i hadn't gotten the g5, but ah well, time to move on.

anyone know when the new powerbooks are comin?
