Is Apple gentle with Powerbooks sent in for repair?

I'm wondering, when people send their Powerbooks to Apple for repair whatever it may be when they receive their Powerbook back are there any scratches, marks or any other problems that were not there when they sent it in.

Your grammar is so bad I had a hard time understanding your question. If you have had a bad experience, that's one thing. If you're asking if Apple is neglectful in care of serviced machines, that's another.

i've had three powerbooks sent to apple over the last 6 years...
in each case, i got the units back fixed, and fine. only once, there seemed to be a slight scratch on a key...
what is the concern? any repair that involves disassemble means a possibility of scratches, but apple seems to be pretty careful.
good luck!

No problem on mine.
I got my PB 15" with white spot problem fixed a month ago. It came back with a new screen, no scratch at all.

It seems like they're gentle for the most part. On my first repair, it came back witha tiny dent in the lower casing that wasn't there before, but it wasn't a big deal to me. It was hardly noticeable.

If you are that concerned take some careful pictures before sending it in.

Can't resist:

I don't know; that seems OK, grammatically. More correctly, though (I think) is "in the care of of the machines they service..."
So anyway, no -- no problems ever in regards to damage. I add unfortunately though, at least four repairs over ten years.

Hi there,
First of all, might I suggest that any posts containing grammatical errors be placed in a special 'Grammatical Error' Forum ... perhaps Skip Breakfast would like to create it .....!!
Secondly, to answer striker100's question on a positive note.
My eleven month old 15" Powerbook developed 'white spot syndrome' at the end of September; I took advantage of Apple's generous offer to repair it and it was despatched on the 1st October to Breda in Holland for a new screen. It was returned to me here in London without a scratch and without any operating problems on the 8th of October - a six day turnaround - pretty darn good I would say.
Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to thank Apple UK/Ireland for their care and excellent 'confidence boosting' service ....!!

I've only had one experience of Applecare UK. I sent my PB12 for a fix of the hard drive which had failed on me. The service was generally excellent altho' when the PB was returned it was missing 512m of ram that I had added at purchase (via an authorised Mac re-seller).
When I called to check where the memory had gone, I was told that it had been removed because it was not Apple-manufactured RAM.
Ignoring the fact that Apple don't make their own RAM, I was a little peeved to find that it had been packed in a static bag (to give them their credit) and dropped in the bottom of the box used for return. I'm not wholly sure that I would have found it unless the support guy had told me where to look (it was underneath the foam padding used to secure the PB in transit).
I now have a battle on my hands trying to convince Apple support that it might have been a little more helpful to either replace the RAM or leave it in place, with a note reporting any errors they had found. As it stands, I need to buy myself one of those teeny-tiny 00 Philips or take it down to the Apple re-seller to have the memory fitted again.
Other than that, the repair work seems fine. No damage to the machine and they have reinstalled OSX with a reasonably recent version (early 10.3 if I remember correctly).
I'd probably take the advice of the previous poster and take some photographs if you're overly-concerned about your PB.

I just got my TiBook 1Ghz back from repair for a hard drive failure and have mixed feelings with what I got back. At first the repair description mentioned only LCD and Display bezel repairs (which I didn't even mention in the support call) and scratches (about 20) all over the top of the lid. A couple of the scratches were deep enough to show the black primer underneath the silver. Since I had been extremely carefull with my TiBook from day one by using a Radtech keyboard cloth and sleeve I was a little shocked.
I called Applecare and politely asked the technician to verify that the hard drive wasn't replaced and that they had indeed replaced the LCD screen and bezel. Sure enough, they found problems with the screen and replaced it and claimed the hard drive was ok and that it was a 'software problem'. When I mentioned the scratches the technician was very apoligetic and said that he would note the damage in my file and that I would need to call back to see if the damage would be covered. He couldn't 'guarantee' that Apple would fix the damage done and that I should not wait too long to send it in.
Although I am happy with the screen replacement (my old one did have a couple of light white spots and a few dead pixels), I was a bit disappointed with the careless manner in which the technician handled the machine and will be VERY disappointed if they don't make it right.
In summary, I am still happy with the quality of service from Apple, but will probably take detailed pictures before I send it in ...just in case.

I sent my 17 PowerBook to repair today, under AppleCare. The box you receive to send the PowerBook is okay, I just added some adhesive film, it just comes with an adhesive 'security seal / void if broken' adhesive, not enough I think.

I had a 12" iBook come back with a crack in the "top case", just below the latch button. I sent it back, and it came back fine.
I consider this as a fluke, and I'm sure it doesn't represent typical Apple service-- I've had consistently good service experiences the other times I've needed it.

I have said before that if possible take it to an Apple Store first and let them send it in if necessary. You can have the genius make a record of the exterior condition of the Powerbook so there will be no disputes after the unit comes back. Two years ago I had to send my 667 DVI in 5 times in order for them to get it right. Each time it came back with damage from a broken USB port to a hideous scratch on the top of the lid. But to their credit they finally got it looking and working brand new. My next story; my 1 Ghz 17" was send in for an intermittant screen problem. I can understand how they thought they fixed it because the anomaly came and went randomly. The point is that the two times it came back with no "other" problems. In fact they arranged for me to receive a new upgraded 1.5 Ghz model the third time it came back. So my patience paid off each time and I am well pleased with the new 17" which is absolutely perfect with no bad pixels. So don't mess with phone support; take it in if you can and save yourself some grief.

Mine has gone in twice-- 1. white spots 2. bad video card-- and both times has returned unscathed.

I had no problems on two or three occassions when I sent my old iBook in for repair.
However, I've heard that with the new AlBooks, it's next to impossible to put them back together just like they were before and that it's accepted that this will occur.

They have done a great job with mine (twice for superdrive failures)
PLUS 36 hour turnaround (from leaving my hands to back on my deck)

i've probably sent my two powerbooks in for 6 or 7 repairs between them. once, my titanium came back with the eject key not sticking up a little higher than normal and a small scratch along the back of the display. but every other time it's come back without a single mark or scratch.

I've sent in three powerbooks for various problems over the years and the only scratches any of them have ever had have been at the hands of Apple service people. I've taken them to work with me every day all this time and it's a little bit irritating to know that all my care not to damage my computers is for nothing if they have to leave your hands to fly to Texas for a day or two. It's never been anything serious or I would have complained but don't expect your PB to necessarily come back perfect, or you may have to!
