I was on the subway at 4am and carelessly laid the Ibook down next to me. Half asleep, I didnt realize somebody sat on it until too late.

The bottom half is working fine (have it currently running off of an external monitor). The LCD is cracked and the top half is kinda warped, it still locks but not snug. =(

Having Applecare, I was hoping there was something that they could do to help. They basically told me 800 dollars to fix it. BASTARDS!

Anyway, I was wondering how much it might cost to do it myself (or how difficult it might be.) I need to replace the entire screen piece.

Another question is "how much can I get for an ibook with a broken and bent screen?"

It's one month used, G4/1ghz/256rm/30Gig/Combo/12"

Any feedback would be appreciated. And you don't have to tell me I'm a moron because my Ibook lets me know everyday.

sorry to hear about your bad news......there's not much you can really do, i would think you can get about $500 for the thing with a broken lcd. I had the same problem when I had a pc laptop years ago I had put it on my passenger seat in my car and someone got in and just plopped on it. It was only like $400 or so to fix mebbe you can try finding a 12" ibook g4 cheap on ebay that isn't working and just grab the lcd I am truly sorry to hear about your disfortune

I'm not sure but you might want to check to see if the G4 LCD is the same as the one used in the G3. If so you could probably get a good deal going that route. Check eBay.

It's amazing how people don't look before they sit down. I'm really sorry about your iBook. If I were you, I'd keep running it off an external monitor until I had the money to send it to Apple for repair. But that's just me. Good luck!

Investing in a torx driver, perhaps a screw driver, a few guides off google, and whatnot, should make your life easier (and cheaper).

Here's a link to a resseller for LCD screens. The 12" iBook screens retail for $310. I'm not sure if this is the best price out there, it's the only link I have. I suspect you might be able to find better with a little bit of searching.

$800 to get that fixed by Apple is ridiculous. I'm not impressed - it's the typical gouge-you-when-they-can position that most laptop manufacturers maintain. One would expect more from Apple.

I just replaced the hinge assembly on one just like yours.
The quote from Apple was about $900.00

The part was under $100.00

If you are not a technician or very handy,I do not recommend trying it yourself.I have dismembered a lot of laptops but none were quite as tricky to take apart and get back together correctly.
I would think you may be able to find someone to do it who feels they are up tp it but I would be cautious.

I am selling this one I fixed here for about the price they told you the screen would cost.

Good Luck

Have you checked your house contents insurance to see if the laptop is covered for accidental damage?

AppleCare does not cover accidental damage, only faults or manufacturing defects are covered by Apple. The price you pay for AppleCare reflects that, if accidental cover was included it would be much more expensive.

Personally if you are taking the laptop out and about with you, you really need to think about insurance for it. Laptops are at risk from damage and of course theft. I pay for insurance for mine, it's about $160 a year, but it is fully covered against any type of problem.

Check your insurance and see if the laptop is covered for accidental damage while away from the property.
