i have had my brand new g3/800 for about 3 weeks and have had a couple of problems:

i wonder if any of you could give any ideas about:

-my cd drive tends to gently click away for no particular reason occaisionally..i can't see why it starts or stops...it does stop completely if i open the cd drawer

-on only one occasion i have seen the screen go a little nuts on startup ie. the lines appeared garbelled and interlaced..when i restarted it didn't happen again and hasn't happened since..do i need to be concerned?

many thanks for any replies

- The CD drive should not click randomly, you may want to check with a reseller if everything is OK.

- The screen issue looks like the famous logic board issue which is covered 100% by Apple... when it dies (it probably will), you need to call Apple, they will fix it for free.

thanks pat++

it has only happened once but i really appreciate your reply and link to the logic board program

indeed my ibook falls within the serial numbers affected so it's good to know i have a backup

on a realted question..is the applecare program worth the money since i know that my logic board is now covered?

Optical drives tend to "click" randomly. That is actually the drive entering a standby phase. My iBook does it and both drives in my PCs do it as well, but it is so quiet that you cannot hear it over the sound of the fans and hard drives. But if it is doing it constantly, you might want to get it checked out, since that can mean that the drive controller is malfunctioning, which can lead to drive failure.
