I love the portability of my iBook so it makes me think about buying a PB instead of a PM.
I am doing Motion Graphics and DVD Authoring but not on a heavy level.
I need a "Pro" station so I can use Apple Edit suite, but PB and PM are reaching the same price:

I will buy the machines in DK as I am based here now.
I only gave them 1GB of RAM as I plan to byu it to 3rd for half the price.

The problem is that the single G5 is a bit "light"... and the dual is more $!

Anyone in this Forum using a PB for the same job and that regrets?

seems like...the choice is up to you.
portability vs somewhat more power.

if you've worked well on your ibook, the powerbook is a good step up.
my girlfriend does FCP etc on her 15" alubook; works well.

and getting a G5 desktop into a backpack (plus monitor) is not gonna be much fun...

pb.

Yop OK but is it worth it to go PB when they are "still" G4 (as my iBook that is 1ghz + 1.25gb RAM)?
...
Thinking.. thinking... ....

Unless you can wait for the G5 PB, the PB is a good value. Not knocking the iBooks, for pro apps and usage, the PB will be a better match. Moreover, the ports on the PB may make more sense for what you are doing.

I know, the PB is "pro" and is a better match for the pro video apps.
I am now thinking to bite the bullet and go dual 2GHz G5 as the price went down and it takes weeks to get a Dual 2.5 (+ it is an extra $500 that I can put in RAM )

I think I made up my mind and will go for the "actuall" proc. generation (G5) as I would like my machine to last a bit!

If you not looking for the portability, you seem to be on your way to a sweet system. Enjoy! Enjoy!

I would keep the iBook as the portable solution for most of your work such as Microsoft Office, internet, and e-mail.

Then use the Power Mac to do the heavy duty work.

If the iBook still works, why not keep using instead of replacing it entirely? the iBook's portability and power is good enough for Microsoft Office, internet, and e-mail while your Power Mac would be dedicated to heavy duty work.

without question, the G5. If you're gonna be doing FCP you're gonna want it. Rendering with the G5 is a hell of a lot faster than my 17 PB. Of course the G5 is loaded, but, shoot, the DPG5 is gonna give you more bank for your buck.

I think the G5 is just now starting to hit prime and software developers are finally starting to take advantage of it. The same rule applies to any new technology: it usually doesn't see any benefits/optimizations for a year after its initial release.

I have an iBook 1.2 G4 w/ 1.25 RAM and I'm loving it. It's been fast enough for me for photoshop and sound editing software (garageband, ableton live, reason...) and games run decently on it too. Everything runs pretty fast except for resizing clips in iMovie. That is painfully slow. I don't do any professional video work but I can imagine you'd want a DP G5 for that .

In other words, keep you iBook for mobility and light work and stick to the powerMac for heavy stuff. That DP G5 should last at least a few years. Dualies always do.
