I am looking to use a slot load combo drive from a G4 with a G3 dual usb. the problem I am having is that the drive is set to master. The drive in the G3 needs to be set a slave of cable select. If anyone knows how to change from a master to slave or another way around this please let me know.

You people on this site are really no help at all. all you do is wine about logic board problems and wether to get a 12" of 14". Ok now that I am through ranting. If you are interested. I found that you can use a drive from a G4 or powerbook, or any drive that will physically fit with a G3 ibook. You will just need to install a jumper to the hard drive so switch it from a master to slave. After this is done it will recognize both the HD and the disc drive. I have a superdrive from a powerbook that I am using with my G3 ibook. I am using the slot bezel from a drive from a G4 ibook with it and the bottom from a G4 ibook. Although the regular bottom will work-there will just be a gap. It seems there is a lot of talk about the G4 ibooks about adding superdrives and internal bluetooth. I just want to let people know that there are things that can be done with the 800 and 900 G3s that can make them a very disirable compuer and at at great value. I am also using a internal bluetooth module that came from a 800 mhz prototype G3. The 800 and 900 G3 are equipped with a jack for the bluetooth module that will accept modules from the powerbooks.

jasonjac123,
I'm also very interested in installing a superdrive (to my ibookG4.) Did you need to flash the drive at all, or was it immediately detected? Also, are you saying that the master/slave setup is different in an ibookG3 as opposed to an ibookG4s?

In the G3 the hd and disc drive is connected with the same cable to the same bus. In the G4 they are on seperate cables and I assume they are on seperate bussed. So with the G4 I would thing that any drive that is from a computer where it is on its own cable would work without having to change any master/slave settings. I did not have to flash any memory. It was recognized fine and burned with the finder. I would keep an eye out on ebay for superdrives from powerbooks. I found this one for $50 (working condition unknow, and got lucky).

thanks, now I know. But really, im I the only one that getts tired of reading the same topics over and over again. I look with anticipation every day to see what newfound insight can be found in this forum, and am usually disapointed. This is why after reading for a couple of years I have decided to post something. But found that nobody likes me-oh well.

It's not that people don't like you, I just think it's stupid to insult people when you have a problem that most people (especially ibook users as it is a consumer machine) have never and will never encounter. I doubt people read the thread and didn't reply out of spite, probably no one knew the answer - get over it.

exactly, i get sick of this forum all the time. only after a revision do i usually come back around.
maybe it's because the ibook is the first Mac a lot of people buy or some other reason, but this forum DOES indeed seem to be full of newbies whining about whether to get a 12" or a 14" or networking issues or who knows what. if people used the search function in this forum there would be three threads-
one with pics.
one with speculation about a wide-screen and other revisions
and a thread for all the whining about the specs, updates and screen resolutions.
couple that with a sticky about the other forums and how if you upgrade your hard drive yourself, you void your applecare. and that's all this forum needs to be good to go.
i'm serious. it's sad.
