Hi All! I'm a spanking new user to this forum and I like what I see! My 1st post is: Is there a better price for the g3 sonnet card for my 1400c out there than the average new cost of 280.00$ I've run into mostly? I mean...my 6400 performa's sonnet L2 cache card was cheaper new and the PB's similar upgrade does'nt seem to be coming down relatively. Are used sonnet 1400 upgrade cards common [or a good idea?] and can anybody advise me on the cheapest price they've seen these? Where? who? New? Used?
Thanx, Greystoke

That's too much to pay for upgrading an eight year old machine. For $280 you can get a used Wallstreet PowerBook G3, which is much, MUCH faster, can use eight times as much RAM (512 MB vs. 64 MB), and can run OS X natively (10.2 at least).

10-4.. Luca, Expected a reply like that. I know you're absolutely correct,
but why on GOD's green earth are there options for my 'folly' still available at such exorbient cost? I mean...I took a 6400/180 PPC to the
"limits"...and that was fun. Granted, total cost put me into iMac OSX area...but along the way, I learned a little "nuts & bolts" stuff. Which is the same 'hobby' I'd like to peruse with my wimp 1400c. I'm not a power user and if you visit the 6400 zone for instance, you'd see where I [& A few others] are coming from. Better yet, - Read my 12/8/04 posting and read the reply to my question then that I answered in the same spirit I felt it deserved.

Wow... that was quite a long delay for a reply!

I don't think that upgrading a 1400c is folly - upgrading old Macs can be lots of fun. But I do think that spending so much to upgrade it is dumb. Ignore those expensive upgrades and look for something cheaper, like a G3/240 (if they have them, I don't know what other speeds are available). I bet a 200-300 MHz G3 will perform the same as a 400-some MHz G3, because you'll be limited by the RAM anyway.

And of course Sonnet doesn't sell slower upgrades because then no one would buy the much more expensive faster ones. A place like LEM Swap might give you more luck though.

You should contact the folks at welovemacs.com . I bet that they can find you an old stock 1400 upgrade for cheap. I had a Newer 210Mhz upgrade, and it rocked.
He can be fixed -- you can't.
