I've seen some posts on this, and I've read a lot of reviews on this...

Are there still a lot of logic board problems w/ the newer versions of the ibook? I'm looking at the 1.2 ghz model...

I'm new to Mac and MacOS, so be gentle w/ me...

what is the logic board?
How do I convince my wife to let me get an iBook?

I haven't heard about any logic board faliures with the iBook G4's .... i'm pretty sure it's a complete redesign and so (hopefully) it won't have any of the same issues.

I start this post by stating you should buy Apple!

I too came from Windows land and indeed use Win at work and Win/Mac at uni. Indeed, I bought an iBook G4 800 in Feb04 and have had 2 new hard drives + a logic board...and 2 weeks after the logic board and hard drive were replaced, my iBook is again back at the Apple Service centre.

I also bought an eMac for home in Jun04 and all is well!

Interestingly, comment from both Apple direct and the tech at the service centre this time suggests I may get a complete replacement.

Anyway, my point is! Even though there are issues out there and I myself have been subject to that, I still know Apple provides a better platform for general use, kids (education), uni research and development...far better than equivalent Windows (although I still think Win has its place).

It comes down to price and what you get...to get the same features, quality (yeah I know that's arguable, but all round Apple products a way better quality) and inclusions in a Windows notebook (ie. a Centrino based notebook) you need to spend nearly A$1000 more then the iBook.

So whatever happens after this time in the service centre, come my next upgrade in a year & a 1/2, I'll be buying Apple again.

Cheers

sounds like I should pickup AppleCare for my iBook within the next year then, just in case.

One thing I liked about buying my Dell notebook was the CompleteCare (accident) protection. If I dropped the system or spilled something on it causing damage, it was replaced or repair. Anyone know of something like this for Macs?

Talk to your insurance agent. I have a rider on my homeowner's poilicy covering my camera gear (and the wife's iBook) for just such things. If I accidentally drop my camera in a lake it will get repaired. I pay $6/mo for this coverage.

My ethernet port went out on my 1.2ghz iBook, purchased in July. I hardely used ethernet and when I connected it up to my wireless router port LAN port I noticed sometimes it wasn't working. Finally it just quit working. Apple fixed it under warranty. The logic board was replaced. It took about 5 days to get it back after leaving it an Apple store.

So you can just take it to an Apple Store to be repaired? Can you take it to any Apple certified repair center or only the Apple Store?

Where I live even at the apple store they send it to Apple. At least that's what they told me. Just because I was curious. I have had my iBook for a year now and it has only had one problem and it was my fault, I accidently pulled the battery charging cable loose on the board when I upgraded the hard drive. But that was an easy fix.
Bless those that sacrifice for us all.
