last night my i book was on my bed when i shut it to sleep. normally fine - apart from the loud "grinding" sound from the HD.
i decided to shut it down for a while to let it rest as it were.
when i booted it up a few hours later i was gretted with the same horrible sound as before.
ill let it warm up i thort and it will be fine.
no such luck stil nasty sounds enless i hit the HD area then it goes quiet for about 5 mins before the grinding sound returns.
so to my question:
does anybody know what is wrong?
its out of its garentee (800 icebook)
i was thinking of selling it to upgrade to powerbook soon but if i have to replace the HD is it worth it?
if i do replace the HD i would do the install myself. how much is a decent 30-40gig HD for an iBook?

I think people are afraid to reply to this one
If your grinding is more of a vibrating noise, maybe something is loose in the mounting, and the hard drive isn't toast.
In my experience, though, grinding = very bad for hard drive... make sure you have everything backed up...
Its probably worth it to replace the hd before you sell it, you can pick up a 30 or 40 gb for under $100.
Good luck.

That is what I would do as well. It isn't too dificult and if you have an ibook or an external just make a backup and save it on one of those. But you can get a 30 or 49 gig drive for not to much here is a link for you to take a look.
Hope it helps.

Replacing a hard drive in an iBooks is NOT trivial, and should be left to a professional. (When I say "not trivial", I am talking 40+ tiny screws, most of them unique, which must go in in layers.)

That is true it is not trivial. It was however easier than i expected it to be! I have had some experience with pulling electronics apart and repairing them so that is probably why. But I have a link that you can look at this shows step by step. If you Think you might have a hard time I would most definitely seek a professional.
