I'm considering replacing the 30gb in my ibook but would like to know how many notebook drives are made to be on 24/7.

Everything I remember seeing talks about how most are made to be on around 8 hours/day and that they just aren't made for fulltime use. Am I inviting trouble if I try to convert my old laptop for more serious duty?

Anybody here using a laptop that ends up being on all the time? Any problems?

Thanks for any tips.

as far as I know they are all made genericly the same. The only thing that you are realy going to get that is different is the manufacturers warranty. I know my toshiba 80 gig 5400 rpm 16mb buffer is on all the time. Aside from the moments when it can sleep. But that is rare and I have not had any problems so far. also the drive came with a 3 year warranty so if something happens to it I can send it to them and revert to the origional till it is replaced repaired or whatever the case may be. Also I have had my drive for about 3 months and it is great having double the storage.

Hope this helps.

Just make sure you get a 5400+ RPM HD. I'd wait a couple months for the 100GB notebook drives to be released.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

well there are 100GB drives available to buy you just have to wait for them to ship. The big problem with the 100's is that they have to be slower here is a link to see the drive. 100GB 4200 rpm. Also notice that it is fujitsu and TOSHIBA paving the way.

I'm planning on upgrading to the Hitachi 7k60 for the 7200 rpm speed. However, there is supposedly an E7k60 model which isn't as power efficient, but is rated to be left on 24/7. Both of these drives currently are 60 gigs.
