Hi all:
I just purchased a new Aluminum 17" powerbook and it is very
noisy -- emits a sizzling noise across it's entire length
(left to right)
I've seen this discussed in the past but I'm not sure what
the final resolution of the problem is -- return and try
a new one or do all of these powerbooks make this noise ?
It's pretty clear in a silent room -- the noise is a cross
between sizzling and a low level whining...
Suggestions ?
Best regards,
--j

System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options tab > set Processor Performance to Automatic
I got my 17" a few weeks ago and that was my first and only complaint. Found the answer buried in these forums somewhere in an old thread. Enjoy your new PB ;-)

Doesn't work. The sound is not affected at all even if I set the mode to reduced when the powerbook is plugged in.
The processor->nap thing (chud tools) doesnt' work either. The only thing that marginally works is unplugging the power -- which reduces noise a bit.
In addition, there is an additional noise when I reduce the display brightness a little bit. I've seen this on some stand alone flat panels too but not on any other laptop. (to hear this, toggle between the highest brightess and one level below).

Hi:
I found more about this LCD whine. Apparently it's a power invertor
thing and was also found on earlier lombard models. I'm surprised
to see this on a brand new 17" powerbook. Needless to say, I'll
be returning my powerbook and maybe get a new one that hopefully
won't have this problem.

Do a search on this, this topic has been discussed and there are a couple of solutions all in all it seems that Powerbooks and some (most?) G5's have this issue. Setting the power mode to reduced or automatic does effect it. For laptops running on battery power also reduces the sound.

2 seperate issues from what I can tell:
1) "sizzle" -- possibly solved by reduced power settings and/or automatic (although that didn't work for me)
2) "LCD whine" -- no known solution. This problem also
happened on the lombard powerbooks. Caused by some sort
of lcd invertor/capacitor problem.
(2) is worse than (1) and is driving me nuts.
