My friend's powerbook has a malfunctioning combo drive which unfortunately causes the mac to lag horribly. When booting in single user mode, it keeps giving the message that the drive in 'undefined' and therefore takes a very long time to boot. Is there any way to disable the drive totally without opening up the case?

Detrius is right. And if you're going to open the case, you might as well replace the drive.
