yeah i just bought one. it was awesome for 4 hours until the logic board failed. now it's been at apple for over a week and status still says "repair has begun." video goes dead and machine freezes. blue lines and sometimes no backlight.

i was hoping they would have figured out the logic board problem since the iBooks have been out, oh , say 4 years now. this is getting old...

I would ask for a replacement. Get a brand new one.

Ugh... if that happened to me, I would have said it was DOA.

You should be able to return it for a new unit I believe.

i was under the impression that MAC has fixed the LB problems, is this not the case? I have seen a lot of people complain about LB problems w/ their ibook. Is this happening w/ the Powerbook as well?

How do I convince my wife to let me get an iBook?

The logic board issue was only on G3 based iBooks. (500 to 900mhz).
The G4 iBook is not affected (at least so far), neither is the PowerBook.

I have a iBook G4 800 (bought in Feb 2004) and have had 2 hard drive replacements + 1 logicboard. Then 2 weeks ago the same problems occured and it was going to be another logicboard. I should point out though, the problems associated with the G3 and earlier iBook Logicboard Replacement program were not the problems I was having. My G4 iBook had lock-up and "couldn't find hard drive" issues, etc, etc.

So after 2 new hard drives and 1 going on 2 new logicboards, Apple have decided (thankfully & gratefully) to replace the whole unit with a new iBook G4 1.2ghz model...the only problem is they don't have stock and I have to wait about a month.

I had thought of proposing an "upgrade exchange" to a PowerBook where I pay the difference between what I paid for my iBook + extra RAM + Airport and the current EDU price of the PowerBook...(around A$158 extra), but I am not too sure Apple would even consider such a request. They may be content with me just waiting for the 1.2ghz iBook as currently arranged.

That might be fine for Apple, but since August I have been without my iBook for 5+ weeks, so I am really not sure if I should even propose it to Apple.

Any thoughts?

After many phone calls with the Reseller and Apple, I was told today that Apple is shipping my new iBook to the Reseller today and I should expect it tomorrow. I am hoping this is definite because I need to finish my Masters paper before Monday.

I originally made some calls today not to enquire about the alternative "Powerbook" option, but to find out why my Reseller couldn't simply replace my iBook with one they had in stock. Some story about it being policy to wait for a replacement direct from Apple, and that the Reseller in no way could use their own stock. I appreciate the administrative policies BUT, there was stock and I was waiting, it doesn't seem that difficult. Are Apple and the Reseller here to satisfy administrative policies or customers?

So as you might imagine, I didn't even bother exploring the "alternative" option.

Nonetheless, hopefully I will be using my new iBook this time tomorrow.

At the end of the day, I am extremely grateful to Apple and the effort the Reseller has put into my case...resulting in a brand new iBook to replace my old one!

Here's hoping the new iBook serves me well...at least until it's time to upgrade in about 2 years.

If it's any note: everyone else I know that owns an Apple iBook or PowerBook (quite a few) never have any problems, so fingers crossed for my replacement!
