Simple question--can an iBook G4 take DDR Ram that is rated faster and run with it? I remember this worked fine with SDRAM--you could use a PC133 chip on a PC100 bus, and the chip would simply downclock. I'm wondering because if I can, I'll buy a stick of the 1 GB RAM I'm using in my PowerBook for the wife's iBook G4, and I'd like to futureproof it a little.

Yes, it will work fine. Since DDR266 and DDR333 are about at price parity by this point, I think Apple only ships DDR333 RAM, even in iBook which can't take advantage of the faster speed. So your faster DIMM will work fine, but it will behave like DDR2100 (DDR266) running at 133 MHz instead of at 167 MHz like in your Powerbook.

working frequency for PC2100/DDR 266 is 133MHz with CL2. In contrast, most PC2700/DDR333 memory has two working frequencies: 133MHz with CL2 or 166MHz with CL2.5. That is, PC2700 has a lower compatibility. In the same fashion, most PC3200/DDR400 memory is compatible with PC2700 or PC2100. But that is not true for all the memories.

as an adult, i have many memories of my childhood... but looking at my parents, it is safe to assume that the older you get, the less you will remember about things. so remember, some memories won't last.

to answer the ram question, it should work. But, not all PC100 systems can take 133 that's clocked down. And not all PC133 clocks down. That should be assumed of PC 2700 and 2100 as well.
