Please help, I have a one month old 12" powerbook, the built in dvd-writer stopped working for no reason. It keeps ejecting every disc I insert. It was working fine before, and now it will only read the system recovery disc. All the discs that are working before stopped working now.
Any idea how I can fix this problem?
Thanks,
Andy

I'd create another user and try doing the same thing logged in as them.
Does it eject discs you put in on start-up also?

Don't hesitate to send the Powerbook in and let the drive be replaced.
I had this problem with my TiBook drive and eventually I had to replace the drive (and pay for it myself). I think its an alignment problem. The slot in drives are really not as robust as the tray mechanism were.

I don't think that would explain why it accepts some discs and not others, though.
More information needed, I think.

Same behavior when I try it again with a new user. When the disc goes in the machine would try to read it, but then after ~ 5 seconds it would eject it. It seems to me the drive is not compatible with the CD/DVDs I insert. The weird thing is, all those discs worked before

Do discs read ok when you put them in as you start up the machine? Try the install disc, for example. Or another type of bootable CD. You should try a few different ones, because it's possible that it's a software problem. I can't think of a good reason why it'd accept the restore disc and no others that doesn't have to do with software, though someone else here might be able to. Good luck, either way.

I tried inserting discs at start up, didnt work. Try production CDs and DVDs, didnt work either
Now I am going to try reinstalling the OS and see if that helps.
Thanks everyone for your help

This is useless. Its the drive. It does not align the disks properly so the laser is out of focus. A mechanical problem.
That some disks work is a sign that the problem is still developing. In a short time no disk will do it any more (as you experience already).
Send the book in as long as its under warranty. This is a well known problem with the slot in drives.

I had a similar problem with my drive not working properly with some discs. The issue resolved itself when I re-installed the OS. So it must have been some software issue for me.
Try booting up from the CD and re-install the OS first. If that doesn't solve it, then send it in.
