It depends on your intended use. If you are just going to browse the web, listen to music, and use office apps the only improvement you'll really see is in load times.

I personally just popped in an extra 1 gig of kingmax from newegg into my 17in PB 1.5ghz and it runs beautifully. Everything is just that much quicker. All of the programs load faster, there's a huge load time/refresh difference when I play mpegs/avis with vpc. I use indesign/illustrator/photoshop and they all run much quicker. File Browser in photoshop previews new files much faster (I scan negatives into 30 meg tiff files), indesign runs without any lag even with several photoshop/eps/tiff files linked to the layout. I usually have all three of these programs open at once, along with safari and itunes and they all run without a hick up.

Go and get ram in full capacity if your work is heavily involved in photoshop work and video editing. Their performance is imporved with more ram.

Open your activity monitor (utilities) and set the dock icon to "show memory usage" (monitor>dock items>show memory usage). Let it run while you are working and check occasionally how your current memory is being used.
