I just got a new powerbook 17" and it has a bad latch.
The latch slightly protrudes more on one side than another
and pressing it doesn't open the powerbook, you kinda have
to really push-in with your nails. Those who haven't
experienced bad latches won't appreciate what I am talking
about but those who have will know exactly what I mean.
Plus, there the display hinge has clearing
one one side but is flush against the other side of the
powerbook case.
Should I return it or learn to live with it ?
Best regards,

If there's an Apple service shop near you, I'd take it in.

latches just often times need to be worked in.... like shoes... you may not like the feel the first time you wear them, but they get better. also, the latches are designed so you kinda have to mean to press them, that way they don't just get brushed against and it opens (like the PCMCIA slot button). and yes, I have experienced what you've talked about.

If it were just the latch problems you were mentioning, I wouldn't really worry about it, it's quite normal for them to be firm for the reasons chipchen mentioned.
But the fact that when closed, your screen is flush to the case on one side, and raised on the other, i would consider that a defect. My 17" has a very slight slant like that, but you wouldn't notice it unless you were checking for that.
Take it in and see what they say.

While it's new, take it back! How much did you pay for it?! It should be right. If you bought it used, and got some $$ off because of the imperfect latch then you made the decision to live with it and were compensated for it. But with a new unit, the deal is you pay top dollar and get top quallity in return. If you wait and try to live with it, and it doesn't work itself out and really starts to bug you, then the repairs will be on you, not Apple.
