How many of you have ever owned a PowerBook Duo? I have had three, and they always were my favorite PowerBooks. It would be super if somebody found a way to hack a 12" G4 motherboard into one. I would.

Anyway I was looking for information on some stuff for my newly acquired 2300c and I was more than unsatisfied with the complete lack of unitiy in the PowerBook Duo web. Sites with any useful information were old, out of date, had broken links, no images, terrible colors, and not many interesting graphics (if any), and above all NO single one place to find information, and NOWHERE to talk about Duos specifically.

So I created one!

Introducing the new www.powerbookduo.com

I started it tonight. It is definetely a work in progress. So far I have an active working Forum (please join if you want to talk about Duos!), a Television Commercial gallery, and I'm working on some article content for the site.

Be sure to visit. Tell me your opinions! Your thoughts, comments, ideas, and any helpful information. I'm excited to have a potential Duo de-facto resource on my hands, and I need of course everybodys help.

After requests by some people to make different versions of the movies, heres what I'm working on for the commercials (will be up tonight most likely):

Duo Version: Low resolution, low sound quality, low FPS versions that can be played on PowerBook Duos, with any version of QuickTime starting at version 2.5. Uses Cinepack

Normal Version: The version that is already there. This must be played with the latest version of QuickTime 6 that support MPEG4.

Gigantic Version: Very high resolution, high framerate version that must be played on a pretty fast computer with QuickTime 6. Takes up the entire "white space" of the PowerBookDuo.com layout.

Dan:
Thanks for creating the site.

I wanted to respond to your question on the site about IDE hard drives in a Duo 280. The 2300 has both interfaces built in, b/c it was hard to get IDE drives when they first came out. The earlier models, AFAIK, can only use SCSI drives.

MCE Tech had a source for IDE to SCSI cards a few years ago, but they're bulky and expensive and I haven't tried to put one in my Duo. They'll fit in the older books just fine, but probably not a Duo.

Anyhow, nice site for Duos. They rock.

Edit:
PowerbookGuy has converted ATA to SCSI 1.3G drives for $90. Sweet. He can tell you whether or not they will fit in a 280. He'll probably just sell you the converter card if you already have a drive.

Also, he has the Rev. F keyboards, new. If folks are struggling along with an earlier version, the Rev. F makes a HUGE difference. Big secret for keyboards on the Duo: don't overtighten them when working on the machines.

He can be fixed -- you can't.

I had a 230. Still have it actually and it still works.

My 2400c was still my all time favorite laptop though.

Yes I have. There are many problems with it.

For one thing, it is a hurried english translation of a Japanese page. It is rather difficult to understand what the site is saying half the time.

Also, the last update was somwhere in early to mid 2000. It is quite rusty.

Finally, it's just plain ugly.
