I just got my new iBook 14" a week ago...I wanted to ask if certain sounds are normal...

The Combo Drive is waaay louder than anything else on the computer, and makes periodic (~1 s apart) clunking noises when reading a disk.

Also, the fan never went on until a couple of days ago, and now it's always on. Even when the computer is completely cool. Granted, the fan is pretty quiet, but it still shouldn't be on all the time, should it?

I'm replying to my own post, which is somewhat depressing.... ok, you all own iBooks, can you tell me if the (quiet) fan being on always is normal? Does yours do it? I can't hear it when there's ambient noise in the room, but if its quiet around then its definately noticable from a couple of feet away at least... I wouldn't consider it a big deal except I could swear it didn't do that before, and there's a couple other minor problems (loose Airport antenna, dead pixel) ... I wanted to catch all of them before I sent it in for service. Thanks in advance.

Seems you got the short end of the stick. My 12" iBook is perfect so far. The fan shouldn't come on all the time - maybe something got messed up in the system fan control - try resetting the pram. As for the combo drive, it scared me too the first time i used it. I pushed a disc in there and at the last second it sucked it up and then sounded like a trash compactor. Obviously though this is normal because everyone else is saying the same thing.

i have never heard the fan on my g3/800 no matter how long it's on or how much cpu stress is going on...sometimes i even worry that the damn thing is hooked up

my cd drive will periodically very softly click for no reason that i can see and then it will stop

when you put a cd in, the damn thing sounds like it's being eaten alive but i guess that's the way they sound

Well now that my iBook has developed a zillion minor problems, I'm going to take it in and see if Apple will fix or replace it. Even if I have to live with them they're just annoyances and it was still money well spent. Thanks for your help.
