installed FCP4 on my iBook and when i went to change the render settings, the program crashed.
couldn't dish out the xtra $1000 for the power book and i love the look of the new iBooks, but now feel regret because i'm not sure if i can run FCP 4 or HD on it.
any thoughts/suggestions?

Video card? Not true. It will run fine on your iBook G4. Sounds like a software issue to me, though. Perhaps the usual troubleshooting will help.

Final Cut Pro can run just fine on machines substantially less powerful than an iBook.
I agree that it sounds like a software problem.
Have you tried repairing permissions?

The system requirements only rise when you want to edit HD video. If you're sticking with standard definition video, nothing changes.
(In fact, Final Cut Pro has been able to edit HD video since version 1.0. The reason that they tacked on "HD" to the name is that 4.5 is the first version that supports HD over FireWire.)

I think I might be able to help here..... is your HD partitioned out? I'd Partition it with an ample "scratch" partition... in other words, if you have a 30GB HD, create a good 10GB partition that is used for nothing other than rendering.

ugh to partitioning.
When you get your book back, I'd trash everything you have on FCp, including plists, receipts and other detritus, and simply reinstall everything over again, then do all the updates and finally repair permissions.

A scratch partition on the same disk as the rest is quite useless.

If you're serious about video, get an external HD since an iBook is pretty small. Use that for any rendering needs and storage.

No.
Partitioning will not improve performance, can reduce performance, and will reduce convenience.
