ok so I just got my new ibook like 2 weeks ago.

ibook 14" 1.33 Combo Drive

my only complaint (besides the speakers kinda sucking) is that when my computer starts up it goes through all of the loading and stuff, loads the finder (including the desktop picture but no icons, dock or menu bar) and sits there. It's not that big of a deal, just an annoyance. It usually waits almost 5mins sometimes before it finishes loading the finder. I check and the only start up items I have listed are the stickies.

Why is the loading time so long and is just a common thing with everyone else's os - 10.3.6 ?

thanks guys

Mine doesn't do that, no idea what might be causing it. Just a question though, why exactly are you shutting your iBook down? Use sleep (just close the lid) when you're finished working and only reboot if necessary.

Try to check & repair permissions (disk utility), maybe that'll help

I agree repair permissions and then try it out. How much ram do you have upgrading will speed it up. Also do you have filevault on? If you do it increases the time to start up. It has to decode the files to start up.

Adding more RAM will not decrease startup time significantly.

Umm... dude, that doesn't say anything about how to make the OS faster. It just lists ten things Apple did to improve performance.

If your iBook didn't ship with 10.3.6, I'd recommend you download and run the 10.3.6 combo updater. Then repair permissions.

Finally, never restart unless it's required by a software install. Just close the lid and put it to sleep.
