I bought a G3 iBook off eBay which has one major problem - it doesn't see the CD-drive at all. Nothing shows up in the System Profiler - it's like there isn't one installed.
I've just finished opening it up and installing a new, different drive (which admittedly I don't know whether it is dead or not), and the same thing when I've started back up - absolutely nothing. Nadda. Zip. Diddley-squat.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? What happens if a drive is dead? Does it normally still show up in the System Profiler, or does it disappear like what's happened in my situation? This would help me ascertain whether it's something other than a problem with the two drives I've tried.
Any other ideas?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Yes it should whether there is a CD in it or not.
My iBook (dual 500MHz) CD-Rom drive failed after about a year and a half and was replaced under warranty - I cannot remember if it showed up under the system profiler when it had failed though.
Since the IDE bus is shared, if your HD works it is unlikely to be the IDE i/f.
Good luck

Thanks for the (swift) reply Will.
I realise that the drive should show up in the Profiler even if there's no CD in the drive, but I'm stumped as to what to do now.... I've never heard of nothing showing up in Profiler. When the guy sold the machine he said that the drive wasn't working, but I just thought it would be an easy swap and hey presto!
How wrong I was.... And replacing iBook drives isn't very easy! (PowerBooks are much more simple btw).
The hard drive comes up on ATA-4 bus btw - as it does on my PowerBook, but unlike my PowerBook which shows the CD drive on ATA-3 the iBook shows nothing. I take it IDE is the same as IDE??

All the aluminum PowerBooks share the iBook's frightening disassembly, I'm sorry to say. It's just the PowerBook G3 series (Wallstreet) through the TiBooks that are easy to work on.
IDE is IDE. Depending on the model, the optical drive may or may not share a bus with the hard drive, but either way it should show up.
Perhaps the ribbon cable to the optical drive is damaged?
