this is my 1st time buying a used mac from someone. i took in my laptop to get repaired today. when he typed in the serial #. the original owner showed up. i told him the Apple Genuis that im the second owner & recently got it. he asked me if i had the receipt? told him its at home. do they usually ask for a receipt if u are the second owner. plus, the AG said, the original owner got it refurb & he shouldnt of sold it to me. dont know why he would say something like that. i should of asked him why but he started to ask me question on when my laptop died. by the time he got done, i forgot to ask him again.
do i alwasy have to bring in the original receipt when i take my laptop in for repair?

As I understand it we are rquired to get some kind of bill of sale from the seller when buying second hand.
After that if you can get the seller to call Apple and change the registration over to you,you would be in good shape. They really prefer the seller to write a letter describing the sale and featuring both parties details. Then they will shift the rgistration to the new owner.
I have done this twice. Once as the seller and once as the buyer.I also call Apple before I buy a used one and ask if the name of the seller I am dealing with is the registered owner(having gotten the serial number first).
So far they have been forthright about this and I have verified the seller as the original owner. This helps me deide to buy or not.
It could be a pain to ask the seller to do what they need to do here but I make the deal based on them agreeing to do their part.
Good Luck.

i bought a powerbook second hand once, and all i had to do was tell the "genius" that it was bought second hand and he transferred it into my name. there was never a question of receipt or the original owner contacting me.

I would guess that it could also depend heavily on the particular"Genius" you talk to at the time. The problem might be that a Genius takes it in for repair deciding you are eligable. Then it comes back and upon trying to pick it up they ask for proof of ownership or something. It can not hurt to have it registered in your name no matter what else happens.
I have noticed that like everywhere else these days, not many people know what the hell they are talking about regarding company policy. Thes Geniuses seem like no exception to me. I would not want to have all my eggs relying on one of these guys to get taken care of....if I could help make it easier especially.
I would hope anyone I do a deal with would happily agree to follow through on their end with having the registration transferred to me.
Or it would make me think twice about the deal(although I always think twice anyway).

if you go to Apple Genius bar they will check and change registration if it is not reported stolen or lost. Then they have your info if it is ever reportrd stolen.

The Apple Genuis didnt change the registration. gave me some excuse that it would take 45+ mins to do. plus, i was in a hurry. i should of asked him to do it. he told me i had to contact Apple Care to get the registration changed.

I purchased a second hand PB Ti earlier this year. When I received the machine I wiped the drive and registered it in my name.
It also had applecare, which was a tad tricky (too many details to post), but it was eventually registered in my name. Apple support helped me by providing the specific details that I needed in order to get everything into my name.
I sent the machine in for repairs afterwards without a hitch.
You should always register a "new" machine in your name.
good luck

went to the Apple Store today & got a repair # this time around. I asked the Apple Genuis (AG) if he could register the powerbook under my name since i bought it from the original owner. he said that it was since they had to send it in for repair. hopefully things turn out good for me. its been 4 days & man do i miss my little baby.

thanks nilhouse & madrag.
during the holiday weekend, I called the original owner everyday. he finally called me yesterday & we had a little talk about my situation. he did me a favor & called up Apple to have the registration changed to my name. an Apple Rep told him that the laptop was changed to my name since I took it in for your. thank you AG guy on Sat. the next time in at the Apple Store, I will have to thank the AG that helped me out & mentally cuss at the lazy arse that didnt want to help me on Fri.
one issue is taken care of. hopefully my laptop will comeback in good condition. is it me or everyone weary when they send back their laptop for repair to Apple?
Hope you wont have any problems when you take your Tibook in Madrag like me. did you take your TiBk in for repair yet?
