Hi... I'm having problems using my 17" powerbook with my television. I connect using the Apple s-video -> composite adapter... the TV doesn't detect. When I set the TV to the aux input, and force display detection, the TV flashes briefly as if it is receiving a signal but nothing shows up. And, as I said, the TV doesn't show up in the display preferences.

I don't know if this helps, but when I go to the System Profiler and Extensions... the extension, ATITVOut (version 2.5.6) says that it is not loaded.

Any thoughts? My DVI port does work fine. Haven't been able to try this on any other televisions yet.

Thanks!

Dave

Hi Dave,

Did you ever get anywhere with this? I'm having the exact same problem.

My DVI out is ok. But when I hook up a tv to the svideo port and hit Detect Display - I get a flash on the tv and nothing else. I've tried 2 different tvs, an av amp and two different svideo cables aswell as the svideo to composite adapter.

I'm in the UK. the TVs are PAL but svideo shouldn't care... I think and because I can't detect displays I can't change refresh rate or whatever.

....?

Hate to say it, but if TV resolutions don't show up when you connect to a TV, your graphics chip or logic board could be hosed in some way since TV detection is all hardware based. Reinstalling or doing anything in software probably won't do anything. If you haven't already, try another TV. If it still doesn't work, you could be looking at a logic board replacement. Sorry.

I've had that exact same problem before... and I almost went crazy since I really needed to show something on a tv at the time. I found that using my s-video to composite adapter was the problem. Either it's just busted (which is odd since it's seen virtually no use since I got this PB less than a year ago) or it is poorly designed and the video adapter is unable to detect the connection in some situations. I don't know... but as I sit here at my desk... s-video->composite adapter->tv ->Detect Display doesn't work, but if I unplug that, use an s-video cable straight through, and click 'detect displays' again, it works fine. The s-video to composite adapter works fine for other video devices though, just not my PB. (1.5Ghz 15")

Keep the rubber side down!

I went to the genius bar yesterday with the same problem, he tested a new one, and it worked fine.

When you plug the adapter in, the screen should flash on your pb, mine didn't, the new one did.
