i've had a problem w/ the hinges on my 12" PB sticking and making loud cracking and popping sounds for some time. the tech at the genius bar said he couldnt do anything about the issue. he even said that he knows its an issue w/ the 12" PB and ibooks being tight while the 17' being particularly loose (wtf..apple knows its a problem and they wont do anything!).
however he recommended that i try silicon powder, which he said could be applied externally. i honestly dont know if this guy is talking out of his as$ since he didnt know where to find any or what kind to get. google-ing doesnt provide much insight either and mostly chemical sites, etc.
any ideas on this? otherwise i think i'm going to get AlGlide from radtech.

Silicon powder would be a hard grit - not good for any joints. The tech probably meant that you should use a silicone lubricant. Silicone lubricants contain petroleum distillates, which may mar the finish of some plastic trim.

Silicone lubricant works great on door hinges.

hmm...good thing i didnt hold out for silicon powder. i went ahead and got AlGlide. put it on last night. it helped reduce/alleviate the tightness and cracking. but its still there. not the perfect solution, but i guess it'll have to do until something better comes along.

bbtw for those thinking of ordering the kit, i think its a complete rip-off in two ways:
1. you can buy the contents of the kit separately and save $2 rather than buying the entire kit (the instructions included w/ the kit are available as a pdf, and the one that is included is a simple print out of that)
2. you dont really need the tools listed; the tools are used to make sure the hinge is properly seated--you loosen the screws and then open/close it and then tighten the screws again.
essentially all you need is the lubricant which is dripped into the two joints. in all honesty i dont know how special this lube is, but i'm sure if you're knowledgable you could probably find something else to use.
