Help...Disc Image Fails To Mount When Installing

I have downloaded a few programs online to try and install on my new mac computer. Problem is, I keep getting the same error message that the programs fails to mount the disc image. This happens to be my first mac (I switched over from pc), so I am a little aprehensve to go poking around to see what the problem is like I would on a pc. I would just like to be able to install the files I download.

Please help.


files all end with a .dmg extension.

i told you to put it in OS X

BTW she's running 10.3.6 on a new 12 inch power book, with all software updates.

Go into Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and try to open the image file from there. If you still have a problem, something more serious could be wrong. Try repairing permissions using Disk Utility as well. Worst case would be reinstalling the OS (archive and install so you don't lose anything). I don't know what specific file could prevent image mounting, but repairing permissions might fix it.
