No warning before sleep on battery

	A very simple question: why doesn't my computer tell me it's about to go to sleep when it runs out of battery power? And why doesn't it give me warnings in advance that it's getting close to dying? Running 10.3.6 on a dual-usb iBook that I bought new in late 2002. I've always had this problem, but never bothered to investigate it until now.
