I have seriously been considering an ibook or powerbook for college. I have been a windows user for years and I feel like it's time for a change. Now my question is, Which is better to go with for a college student? I would like to have a good balance between proformance and battery life. I will be using this laptop for everyday purposes. I dont plan on gaming on it for I have a decent windows desktop for that.

I have one more question, I have heard about powerbooks getting very hot after use, do the ibooks have the same problem?

It varies on the use, but over all, Ibooks are a great machine... add memory in it and it zip by through everything.
I just got the 1.2, and get this, I burned 7 disks music on my external burner (cause it's faster), had 5 different applications open at the same time (checking email as well) and all the burns went though without a hitch (and I was using the battery.

I agree the iBook sounds like what you need. The more ram that you get the warmer it will be. Not a huge difference, but usually a noticeable one. It will get warm just like any other lap top, but you won't get that loud horrible fan even when/if it does get warm. Also the reason the PowerBook gets hot is because it dissipates heat at a faster more efficient rate. That is why it is made of aluminum. aluminum is one of the best metals to use for this. It will absorb and release the heat very fast, that is why it feels so much hotter than an iBook. Plastic holds the heat in so you feel less of it, but the computer internally is warmer.

I'm a college student and my iBook is perfect for me. Get a good case and it's all set to go for school. I get about 4.5 hours on the battery when using full screen brightness, Safari, Mail, iCal, and Word. I dim it a bit when I open iTunes. So, generally, between 4 and 5.5 hours of battery life here. You won't be disappointed.

I totally second that. After three years of computer science, I am now an American culture and literature major (intercultural communications minor) and absolutely adore the iBook. 6 hrs of battery life, not getting hot whatsoever (it might get a bit warm under your left wrist but that's really just warm, not hot) and it has every application that I need. It's nice to work with, it's only 5 lbs and it indeed does seem to attract chicks

No they don't. The iBook is definitely what you need. Great cool machine
Make sure you get an extra 512mb stick and it will be perfect. (Get it from crucial, Apple's memory prices are much too expensive)

Depending on what you're about to do with the iBook, maybe you can save some money and get an additional 256MB stick. That's what I did and I know that 512MB is enough for what I'm doing.
