I just noticed while stduying that a paper clip was stuck to the area to the left of the latch. Upon further review to the right of the latch is also magnetic. What is in there that is making it magnitized? Anyone else notice this? Try it and see what happens!

Thanks

The magnets pull the latches out of the top case when you close the lid. They swing down to latch into the bottom case. This is the way it is on all white iBooks and all aluminum Powerbooks (Titanium too I think, but I don't have one).

ibook_steve is right.

it's another of those little Apple details where you briefly stop and wonder how else it could be.

Correct. The point is that the hooks which stick out of other laptops can get broken off because they are always exposed. If that happens, the laptop will never stay closed (not without duct tape anyway).
