I've got an October 2004 revision iBook 12", and no matter what options I try in Energy Saving, I cannot stop the laptop going to sleep when I close the lid on battery power.
I got the iBook for a project which involves warwalking (don't ask...). KisMAC does the job well, but I can't have the laptop open or on AC power in my backpack....
I'm aware of the heat risks, etc, but as the laptop is for short-term use only (at the moment, if I grow to like OSX, that may change), its not an issue.
So is there any way to make it stay awake permanently?

I'm pretty sure there is a tool that does exactly that but I forgot what it's called. Try the search in this forums, you'll definitely find it. After all, this question pops up once or twice a month.

pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid across the line broadside,
thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, shouting GERONIMO!"

OK, I'll dig a bit deeper - I did check before posting but nothing came up.

One of the inevitable newbie questions, then...
Might be an idea to have a FAQ in each forum to stop people like me asking the same question a million times....
Thanks

Yeah we already considered and discussed that.
PS: I just remembered what the application is called... NoSleep

Heh, seems to be a lot of ways of doing it then
ONE of them has to work
I've run my Sony Vaio closed in a bag for 3 hours, so I'm sure the iBook can handle an hour closed without damage. After all, Apple hardware is meant to be better, right :-)

One way to make sure it won't overheat is to set the CPU speed to minimal in the energy settings preference panel.

OK, all of these seem to suffer the PMU bug/feature/whatever, except maybe NoSleep, which wants to get a kernel patch from somewhere, which it can't as I'm behind an authenticating proxy server...
Back to x86 I go for anything that needs laptop awake in bag it seems.
