Hello,
I bought a 12" 1.2 gHz combo drive iBook thru amazon about 3 weeks ago. My wife and I played several DVD movies on this machine since then without any problems. However tonight I popped in an audio cd (straight from the shrink wrap) and the combo drive was extremely loud. I'm talking 747 loud! Never heard a peep out of this iBook until tonight.
I'm calling apple tomorrow but thought I'd post a message here first to see if anyone else had the same problem. FYI - I ran a search here and couldn't find any info about optical drive noise, only hard drive noise.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I never tried playing a DVD before but did just now. First it spins up and is quite loud, then when DVD Player Software starts to play the movie, it spins down and is almost inaudible.
But with CDs, it's pretty much normal volume. It's loud but it's not 747 loud. Maybe you wanna try another CD as well, some CDs are louder than others.

I've owned several iBooks and PowerBooks, and all whined and hummed loudly when playing CD's.

Rip them into iTunes and you won't have to worry about the noise anymore.

yea there is nothing wrong with your drive... some cds will make quite a vibration. the issue would be with the cd, not the drive, as if the disk is slightly unbalanced, at such high spin rates it'll make some noise. mine does too.
