Go external.

We currently sell a LaCie external Firewire DVD+/-R/RW drive for €170, so you should be able to get one at less than $200.

Several reasons:

a) Faster. Much faster.

b) Greater format flexibility.

c) DOUBLE-LAYER BURNING. (That's 8.5 GB per double-layer disc, rather than 4.4GB per ordinary DVD-R in the internal Superdrive.)

d) Future-proof. Double-layer is the standard for commercial video DVD, and it's only JUST become available for burning (media are expensive, but will drop). What's next? HD-DVD? Blu-Ray? Once that's settled in a very few years, what about your obsolete internal Superdrive? Exchange it? Or just replace the external? Because

e) Installing a new drive in the 12" Powerbook is a BITCH. You practically have to disassemble the entire thing. Check http://pbfixit.com for pictorial guides on what to do.

f) The faster burning will mean you can burn more, more often. Which is good, because data reliability of DVD-R is complete **** at the moment. My first (Apple-branded!) DVD-Rs are already having read errors after not two years.

Thanks for your reply, but I need an internal one. I am always on the road, and I just think it would be to much hassle with an external. ( How can I use it on a plane?) And I have a G5 at home with a Pioneer 108 in it.

So where can I buy the fastest internal SP for the aluminium 12" 867?

Other World Computing (http://www.macsales.com/) sells SuperDrive upgrades for powerbooks here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/Static_Pag...ook%20Upgrades

They only state compability with TiBook models, but it's probably worth a shot to email them and ask if the upgrade would be compatible with an AlBook (I'm also not sure why they list a drive with the same specs as being almost $100 different in price depending on which 'book model you buy it for).

Anyway, no guarantees, but that's one option to explore.
