The battery status icon on my new Powerbook never displays above 99% even when fully charged and plugged in. I've tried re-setting the PMU and this still persists. Any ideas?

Mine does that all the time, in fact it's stopped charging at 97% today. I was under the impression that it was some measure to preserve the battery's future life-expectancy. If it isn't - well, life goes on...

I wouldn't worry about it.

Try looking at the freeware SlimBatteryMonitor. I prefer to use this instead of Apple's built-in battery indicator.
