Unfortunately, my 20 gig hard drive in my 550MHz ti powerbook is coming to an end.

Any suggestions on what type of hard drive I should replace it with? Also, can I install the drive myself or should I get someone to do it for me?

I find my current powerbook gets hot quickly (the fan comes on a lot when running apps). Will upping the rpm on a hard drive make the computer hotter?

Upgrading the hard drive speed and/or size shouldn't have an appreciable affect on temperature or battery life. Many people have reported that they can't seem to tell a difference; besides in performance.

As for which drive to pick, what do you want to spend? My favorites as of right now would be the 7200rpm 60gb IBM/hatachi 60gb 7200rpm drive for about $150 at newegg... or the new 5400rpm 100gb drive (forget the manuf) for $199 at newegg... If you were doing fine with a 20gb drive I'd probably recomend the faster 60gb drive as it should really give you a nice bost in performance. I will say however that I'm not sure what type of connectors your pb uses... if it's ATA66 or 100 or what not. I'm not sure if 7200rpm wouuld be overkill for ATA66 but I'm thinking it might?
