My GF got an iBook and now when I take a look at it, it seems that a little bit of the ?bezel? is sticking out (like a mm or two). To me it seems as though if there are any clips holding the top half together that it might be because one of the clips isn't in correctly while the rest are in place. We took it to an Apple store and she did the first no no of any Applecare chat, she said she dropped it on the floor from about a foot and the guy gave her some slack about changing the whole lcd for 600-700 bux and that since she dropped it she'd have to pay. I figure if my theory is right, then maybe I could just open up the 4 screws myself to see whats going on, and if outta place I could try to put it back into place.
So my question is can I void Applecare altogether, (they didn't take down a serial so Apple doesn't know) like maybe ripping a security sticker that apple places there to find out if iBooks have been tampered with, or is it as easy as it looks?

There are clips all around the perimeter of the top piece and the bezel aligns with them in theory.
I used a spudger or flat plastic hook to unhook them.
It is the kind of operation you just know is going to be worse when you put it back together.
I have seen a lot of them as you described with a bezel not seated flush everywhere.
I think partly the hooks bend when they release and just don't line up correctly after that.
I also can imagine a wire from inside being a little bit in the way and preventing the bezel from seating flush.
There is no indicator that you have taken it apart other than it might be uneven but I think they can easily come that way from the factory too.
On my new PB the same thing happens but to a slightly lesser degree. It is frustrating but common I think.
Some people don't seem to notice or be bothered by this but it drives me crazy.

Thanks for the response. So after taking the four screws out, what should I use to pry the thing apart? I've heard of credit cards, the last poster used hooks, anything else that might make it easier?

My bezel isn't in the entire way around either, but thanks to our insane warranty laws here, I'm going to wait till the machine is about to go out of warranty and send it back to get it fixed, and hope they give it a general once over then :-)
The bezel doesn't seem like it'll be in any way easy to get on or off, though.

Irez:
The spudger I used is designed for just this purpose.
It is just a plastic stick with a little hook shaped nose.
It slides between the two case sections and goes ahead of the clip, unlatching it in the process.
It works well and requires a little jiggling at some clips.
I would think a dental pick could work too but you should take care to avoid scratching and pushing too hard which could break the plastic.
I could see a credit card working but I would use the corner first si I didn't break anything with the extra leverage the whole edge would provide.
There is a certain feel to it(like most things) and softer is better.
I am convinced that once the clips are bent a little they will never go back flush. Any attempt to straighten them just weakens them and may break them.
The plastic just cant snap to thhe tolerances required more than once in my opinion. I imagine the more often one does it the easier it gets too.
I know you can get the tool from any electronics supplier and maybe from Radio Shack. I think you can also get them from the folks who have the online take-apart guides.
Just be careful.

What about those who mod their books like every other week? I'm going to give another try one more time at another location, and if that doesn't work then Imma do it myself and hopefully I fix this issue.
