Hi guys,

This is a 1 GHz G4 iBook (installed the card myself) conected to a aiport express base. Both 1 month old. I can affirm reception is very poor just 10 feet away it only gets around 50% reception. Any ideas of what can be wrong?

Thanks

Suspect #1: antenna cable not 100% plugged in. Fortunately, you can go in and plug it back in (use a bit of tape to keep it solidly in place if you like) without messing with the wire bail that holds the card in place.

Already checked....indeed if I remove the antenna plug the recpetion does not improve. I suspect that the other antena cable end must be loose. Any thoughts?

Thanks

That'll be kind of hard to check, since the antenna is burried in the laptop's case. Have you tried removing and reseating the card? It couldn't hurt. And maybe updating the AirPort software, too.

Is this the first time you're using the ibook with wireless? Maybe the internal antenna is hosed, and you'll have to send the iBook back to apple to fix it.

OK, I´ve decided to open the machine and take a look to the antenna end to be 100% sure the cable is attached at both ends. Do you know of any manual that would help to complete the task? Photos and tips to open it would be welcome.

Thanks

If the machine is less than a year old, it's covered by Apple's warranty, and they ought to fix it free of charge. But if you open it, you void the warranty.
