I run my powerbook as a desktop (originally intended to use it as a portable but bought an ibook G4 to take daily abuse from a college campus) and have it plugged into the AC adapter all the time. However over a couple of days AC adapter will sometimes turn off and won't turn back on unless I unplug it from the wall and plug it back in. If I don't have the battery in, the machine will simply turn off. I thought it was a bad adapter so Apple replaced that but seems to be more than that. Now I know powerbooks are meant to be used as desktops all the time so maybe this is within specs, but does anybody know?

First of all, there's no reason to ever take the battery out, even while on AC. Why are you doing that? Second, you should try a different power outlet. Apple AC adaptors will shut off, like a fuse, and require unplugging and replugging to reset. This means that the AC outlet you are using may be funky, causing your adaptor to constantly shut off. Try plugging in somewhere else to see if you keep having the problem.

Yep, the Apple person you spoke to didn't do their homework, because there's even a knowledge base article describing it.

ibook_steve's diagnosis of bad power is exactly right -- the white cube adapters shut down when the power is dirty. Unplugging resets it.

A good power strip may be all that's needed (in my old place, it was all it took). If not, a UPS with power conditioning may be needed.
