I had to send my 15" for a white spot repair. It's a year old. My wife's iBook is on its last legs, so I bought a new 12" PB. I then imported all of my files over to the 12" and sent the 15" for repair. A week later my 15" is back nicely fixed. The question is: what's the simplest way to get all of my files from the 12" back to the 15" so I can hand the 12" over to my wife?

Option 1: Clone the 12" on the 15". Nice b/c I would get some of the new iLife apps on to the 15"; also safest b/c all of the files transferred. Uncertainty: not sure whether there are specific files for the 12" that would be incompatible with the 15".

Option 2: Boot the 15" in FW Drive mode; delete the user file on the 15" and then copy over the user file. Is this safe? Are there settings or preference files that are computer specific that cause problems?

Option 3: Copy only the folders that contain user data from the 12" to the 15". I am fairly certain I can find all of these, but this is the least preferred because it's tedious.

Option 4: ?

Thanks for any help and advice you can offer.

Go with option 1. It has the advantages you mentioned. All OS X installations are generic (not entirely true--but mostly) so the 12" system will boot your 15" just fine.

Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I'll do. And just for curiosity sake, I know Option 2 is possible. Is it advisable?
