Ok, so I want to install some RAM to a PowerBook. I found a guide here, now what I need is some help other than the actual install. On Apple.com for the top 17" G4 it says "two SO-DIMM slots support up to 2GB". What does this exactly mean? Can I install 2GB RAM on both or 2BG on each? Can install DDR? Im just making sure I can buy any DDR memory right, dont need anything special for macs?
Im planning to buy a G4 so Im doing a lil research.Unfortunatly my connection is messed up so I couldnt search for past topics, sry
Thanks guys,
Fort

1GB in each slot to equal 2GB total (1GB in two slots equals 2GB). Make sure its PC2700 and you should be fine.

Make sure they are PC2700 SO-DIMMS. The 333 wont work as far as I know. The 1 Gig modules are out there, but expensive $200 or so. The actual install is simple. Just make sure you have a screwdriver that fits the screws well or you will bugger the heads. Mine were in there REALLY tight.

I've found 1GB PC2700 DDE PC333 SO-DIMM.. but the ones i've found are 184PIN. Does it have to be 200PIN?

SO-DIMMs are not 184 pins. I think that's the size of a regular size desktop DIMM. It must be an SO-DIMM with 200 pins.

The SO in SODIMM stands for "small outline" I believe... this is notebook memory. Physically it's about half the size of regular DDR DIMMs that you would use on a pc or mac desktop (like a Powermac). You need pc2700 SODIMMs as I believe someone stated above.
Actual install takes only a few min. You power off the machine, remove the battery, and remove the 4 small phillups screws that cover the memory slots. There are two slots, and if you've ever installed memory in a PC or Mac desktop it's pretty intuative as to how they work. You do have to insert the chips at like a 30 degree angle IIRC. If you don't force anything all should go well. SODIMMs, like most ram, are "keyed" so they only go in one way. They simply click and lock in. Also, the memory slots on the powerbooks are one on top of the other. So if you buy 2 1gb modules you have to remove both installed memory modules one after the other and then place both modules back on top of eachother. It's easy to figure out and the manual that comes with the powerbook outlines the process fairly well...
