Hey,
I'm considering getting an iBook sometime in the middle of this year.
I've currently got a desktop PC, and was talking with a friend about it being a bit slow, and upgrading the RAM. He said something along the lines of "it's possible to have too much RAM", which he said may cause some speed problems. He didn't go into specifics.

Is this an issue with the iBook at all? Cos idealy I'd like to give my iBook as much RAM as I can (768 min).

Thanks.

HA HA HA you can't have too much ram. but you can have more than you(personally) can use. I would say get 512 in addition to the built in 256 megs.

No, you can't have too much RAM. But any excess RAM is just wasted money. 768MB is a good amount for most people.

Go for an extra gig if you can afford it but 768 is plenty.

Thanks for the replies all.
Yeah.. that's what I thought.. too much RAM just sounded a bit strange to me.
I'd be using the iBook mostly for school work, but also for a reasonable amount of music stuff, and a bit of video.
I'm thinking 768 should be fine for this, right? No point paying for RAM i don't need.

Music and video can never have too much RAM. Go for even more, if you can afford it.

I agree with tooki. The more the better for those Sort of things. It would be a shame to not have enough rather than have to much.
Bless those that sacrifice for us all.

Is your friend a windows guy?

There were versions of windows that could become slower after RAM has been added. That was because the memory management costs processing power on these versions.
But I cannot say which versions were affected. A friend of mine found this out and he runs NT4 and Win2000.

Poor windows guys.
Macs don't have this kind of problems (up to now).

Also if he's a windows guy, and especially not a heavy gamer or someone like that the amounts of ram put into mac machines may seem a little high for him. My moms windows xp box has 256mb and for just browsing the web and email junk she does you can't even tell. 256 on a mac doing anything is unbearable. Most people on windows computer would never even consider putting 1gig in and its still pretty hard to fill up on there.

Totally different systems and hardware.

768 is a nice amount for the ibook. Just about anything you can do will be fast enough to work with.
