As I posted earlier, my PB's main logic board/processor/L2 cache appear to be failing for the third time in five years.

Gary Daily at Daystar Technology is telling me that the MPC7410 processors Apple used in the original 500MHz Titanium Powerbooks are prone to failure.

"The parts Apple uses are not rated for the 250MHz speed. This in turn under certain situations creates all type of havic [sic] on the hard drive. We have seen it a number of times."

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone else has heard anything about this or whether or not anyone else has had similar experiences with their systems running this chip in this configuration. My machine is a Powerbook G4 Titanium 500MHz with 512MB RAM and Airport installed.

Does anyone know where I can find detailed specs of this chip -- say, showing the backside bus speed? Basically, anthing agreeing with his analysis that the processor isn't rated for the Apple configured backside bus speed of 250MHz.

I'd appreciate any feedback anyone might offer.

I've found Motorola's description of the chip. After reading a little more there and around the web, it looks like the L2 cache is not on the processor. The issue I am having apparently has to do with the L2 cache and the fact that Apple uses non-quality parts that often fail when working in conjunction with this processor. So, it looks like the MPC7410 is fine, it's just Apple's L2 cache is not quality.

I understand that this would ordinarily belong in Powerbook, it's just that the people who read this forum would logically know more about what lives on the logic board.
