A friend has a 12" Aluminum with a CD-RW/DVD-RW drive that fried. It's out of warranty so he's going to have to pay for the repair himself. I'm going to install it for him and am looking for a replacement.

Anyone have a line on a compatible drive he can get online? Open to any and all suggestions.

This is what Apple put in it originally...

Serial Number:
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW

Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No

Socket Type: Internal

TIA.

You mean like these from Other World Computing? I've considered getting an internal DVD writer for my TiBook, too...

I just looked over the steps for removing the optical drive from a 12" Aluminum at pbfixit. A lot more steps and dis-assembly than just removing the hard drive.

I have been investigating the possibility of upgrading my PB to a drive capable of dul layer burning, such as the Pioneer DVR-K04L - the drive used by the MCE upgrades... Lowest price that I tracked down was from

Why would you buy from MCE for $249 when you can get the same drive for $199 at DFW Depot?
