Hi all, need a little help here, as this is driving me nuts.
I'm trying to use a headset for voip and skype on my powerbooks, (ti and 12"). If I plug the headset in, I can hear fine, but the mic doesn't work. thought it was a duff headset, exchanged it and new one doesn't work. Plugged into friends pc, works fine.
Thought perhaps my line in socket had died, plugged in the ipod and that works fine.
Found a tie clip mic and that would work, but pretty quietly. I've tried it on both powerbooks and it doesn't work on either, yet works fine on a pc, so I know the mic is working.
I haven't got mute on, the input volume is turned all the way up in the sound preferences panel, yet no moving bars and no input.
Is there anythign I'm missing here. It's driving me to distraction. I can use the internal mic, or my eyesight mic, but I'd like to just use a regular headset somtimes.
thanks,
J.

Well, knock me down with a feather. Same problem here. I thought I had a duff line in and just decided to live with it.

I'm guessing this is an analog microphone, but even if it is through USB, check out your settings in the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder. Make sure the microphone is not muted or level reduced there.

The audio input on all Macs made after about 1993 is not a microphone input, but rather a line-level input. A plain microphone will not work on a line-level input.
Either use an iMic device, which does have mike-level input, or get a powered mike, or get a USB headset mike, or get a mike preamplifier.

Thanks Tooki,
I thought it might be that, but hadn't seen anything to suggest it. Bit of a bugger for doing voip, as I like to use a headset, I now have two analogue headsets that don't work.
Think I'll get a bluetooth headset and use that. I don't fancy the idea of carrying a mic amp and headset just to use voip. I can use the internal mic and some headphones, but that's not the best sound quality by the sound of it.
Cheers though, at least I'm not going nuts.
